Tooth decay is the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth. It can be a problem for children, adolescents and adults. Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, constantly forms on your teeth. When you eat or drink foods containing sugars, the bacteria in plaque produce acids that attack tooth enamel.
Tooth decay can occur when acid is produced from plaque, which builds up on your teeth.

If plaque is allowed to build up, it can lead to further problems, such as dental caries (holes in the teeth), gum disease or dental abscesses, which are collections of pus at the end of the teeth or in the gums.

Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or cavities, is a breakdown of teeth due to acids made by bacteria. The cavities may be a number of different colors from yellow to black. Symptoms may include pain and difficulty with eating. Complications may include inflammation of the tissue around the tooth, tooth loss, and infection or abscess formation

Prevention of dental caries includes regular cleaning of the teeth, a diet low in sugar, and small amounts of fluoride. Brushing the teeth twice per day and flossing between the teeth once a day is recommended by many. Fluoride may be from water, salt or toothpaste among other sources.

Tooth Decay around the edges, or a margin, of fillings is also common for older adults. Because many older adults lacked benefits of fluoride and modern preventive dental care when they were growing up, they often have a number of dental fillings. Over the years, these fillings may weaken and tend to fracture and leak around the edges. Bacteria accumulate in these tiny crevices causing acid to build up which leads to Teeth decay.

You must eat healthy to keep dental decay and Even though cosmetic dentistry and implant dentistry have advanced a lot in the last few decades and offers use options for dental restorations, we should always strive to give our teeth the best chance available to stay healthy for as long as possible. What we eat and our oral hygiene are two of the most important factors to keep our health (beyond genetics and age). Here is a list of nutrients and healthy food suggestions you need to look at to ensure you can prevent or reduce the risk of gum disease or teeth problems like dental decay.

Just as you learned from your dentist at an early age, prevention is the best way to avoid a cavity. There are many measures you can take to help prevent the formation of a dental cavity or other types of tooth decay and damage. The first step in preventing a dental cavity is to start and keep up with a comprehensive oral hygiene routine. While this can sound overwhelming, once it becomes a habit, you’ll be pleased to enjoy the healthy mouth and beautiful smile that comes with good oral hygiene.

To start, a dental restoration is a dentistry treatment for recovering or reinforcing the general structure and function of a tooth. It usually is the treatment to go when dealing with decay on the surface or the interior of a tooth, after it has had a root canal. When the pulp and the nerve affected by the dental decay is extracted, the tooth is filled with a special material so it can withstand the normal pressure of biting and chewing, as otherwise the tooth would cave in or eventually crumble because it’s structure is empty, compromising the whole tooth integrity.  Also, a root canal will need to have a dental crown.
