A crown, sometimes known as dental cap, is a type of dental restoration which completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant. Crowns are often needed when a large cavity threatens the ongoing health of a tooth. They are typically bonded to the tooth using a dental cement. In dentistry, crown refers to the anatomical area of teeth, usually covered by enamel. The crown is usually visible in the mouth after developing below the gingiva and then erupting into place.

Dental crown procedure care essentials you should know
It is very important that you give your dental crowns special attention to clean them. Remember, the main function of a crown is to cover most or all of a damaged tooth to restore its looks and functionality.  Failing to clean all food leftovers and debris trapped between your teeth and the crown could lead to a number of problems. The accumulation could provoke gum disease, gingivitis, tooth decay, etc.   Follow these easy crown procedure care essentials to keep them in top condition:
Brushing: It is essential to brush to keep your teeth healthy, especially now that you have the crowns.Flossing:  You should floss at the very least once a day. When you brush you are missing the 30-40% of your teeth’s surface. This is why flossing is so important. You need to slide the floss out in a horizontal way, instead of up and down trying to snap food particles from there. Doing it up and down might end up dislodging the crown cap. If you have any questions on how to floss properly you should ask your dentist.

A Root Canal procedure is used when your tooth is damaged to the pulp OR When the cavity has reached or is very close to the pulp. It is mainly used to prevent or remedy infection or pain.

It is used to prevent the infection and save or TRY to save the tooth. It is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or has become infected. Remember a Root Canal is the last option before an extraction.

During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form. The Root Canals we perform at our clinic are done in a couple of sessions.

If you have a lot of decay, and the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth. This may eventually lead to an abscess. If root canal treatment (RCT) is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out.

If we suggest you should get a Root Canal and you decide not to have it, the alternative is to have the tooth removed. Once the pulp is destroyed, it can’t heal and it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth.

Why do I have to set a crown after a root canal?
The process for root canals has two steps. First, the root canal is performed so we can remove the pulp, this means all the small nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth. The second part is the prosthetic part, to place the posts and the crown.

Does the root canal last forever?
The longevity of a root canal depends on the dental care you have after the procedure and many other factors.  It can last for a long time with the proper care, but not forever. Remember a root canal is one of the last ditch efforts to save a tooth.

Can my tooth get infected after a root canal?
It depends on what the reason was for doing the root canal, if it was infected before or because an abscess existed, then we need to prescribe an antibiotic for the infection and in specific situations we may need to do the same to prevent infection after we finish the treatment.
